Sharing Properties Between Civil 3D Subassemblies using Output Parameters

If multiple parts in a Civil 3D Assembly require the same dimension or slope, it may be possible to share their common properties.  By sharing properties, future design changes are more efficient because one subassembly part can be used to drive the properties of several others.  In today’s installment we’ll learn about a concept called Output Parameters.

Machine Control: 5 Trends Contractors Need to Know

Moving earth and building roads with the help of machine control and GPS technology may not be standard operating procedure in the construction industry just yet, but it’s well on its way. Currently, about half of all motor graders and 35 percent of all dozers use positioning sensors and a display to provide operators with a reference between the position of the blade and the target grade.

How Kimley-Horn Surveyed an Airport 5x Faster with Drones

Drones and airports usually don’t mix, but perhaps that’s about to change.

This past summer, there was a small black quadcopter buzzing above the runways and around the control tower at Front Range Airport outside of Denver, Colorado, capturing high-resolution images without disrupting the day-to-day operations of the airport.

Trying to be Civil in a BIM World

BIM is a term that is getting thrown around out there a lot lately. You hear about BIM 360 and all the different flavors of it. There are BIM Mangers out there now. You might have even heard talk of Civil 3D being able to interact with BIM 360 Glue. But up to this point, BIM seems to have been mostly associated with Revit, right? There really has not been any Civil in BIM, has there? Well, that is not entirely true–at least from a project standpoint. I will explain a workflow that I have been involved with on a project to give you a better idea of how Civil not only fits into the world of BIM but also some workflows (or workarounds in some cases) to get your Civil objects from Civil 3D into a multidiscipline project that is hosted in BIM 360 Glue.

Five Reasons All Civil Engineers Should Gain Field Experience

Anthony Fasano, PE

I started out my career as a civil engineer as a summer intern for a small civil engineering company. They told me to go out in the field with the "Party Chief" and hold this "Rod." Well I didn't know what that meant, but I wasn't crazy about it. All I knew was that it was hot out, I was walking through sticker bushes all day, and getting poison ivy constantly. Not fun, and certainly not what I envisioned when I decided to pursue civil engineering.

Fast forward twenty years later and that field experience as a surveyor was critical in helping me to become a good civil engineer.
